Despite the fact that the term is an oxymoron and could never work (except as a totalitarian scheme) it still speaks to the ancient hope we all nourish for tranquil times, for the days when the lion will lie down with the lamb.Conservatives are realists. We know the lion would need a lobotomy to be able to do that with any regularity.I recall reading Chesterton ponder whether the lion lying with the lamb was a result of the lion ceasing to be a lion by nature. He posed the thought that the lion was still a lion, but had its needs satisfied.And doesn't that thought just make the image pop? Isaiah knew what he was saying, eh? |
